Intial research
Identifying Critical Threats: The creative journey of Lōkahi began with a comprehensive understanding of critical threats facing coral reefs, such as UV exposure and physical contact. This phase laid the groundwork for a visionary solution to safeguard these delicate ecosystems.
Brief: In response to the identified threats, collaboration with "Corals, Community, and Research" established the brief for Lōkahi. The project aimed to create a customisable, scalable, and bio-based design that could revolutionise reef restoration.
Challenge and solution
The problem-solving phase of the journey involved addressing challenges on multiple fronts. Lōkahi's design not only provided protection against UV rays and physical contact but also suppressed algae growth and actively attracted coral larvae through innovative sound technology. Each solution contributed to a holistic approach to reef conservation.

Concept
The concept of Lōkahi took shape as a multifaceted protector, seamlessly integrating innovative design features. Beyond its role as a snorkeling-alternative for tourists, Lōkahi symbolized community engagement, safeguarding local resources and fostering responsibility. For researchers, it offered a boat-free platform for equipment deployment and long-term monitoring.
App Design
Incorporating an app into the Lōkahi experience marked the final chapter of its creative journey. The app facilitated interactive learning, connecting visitors with local researchers and providing insights into ongoing reef conservation efforts. Lōkahi's app transformed traditional snorkeling into an immersive eco-tourism encounter, blending education and adventure seamlessly.
Conclusion
In essence, the creative evolution of Lōkahi unfolds through the identification of critical threats, establishing a brief, addressing challenges and solutions, realizing the multifaceted design of Lōkahi, and integrating an app for an enhanced visitor experience. Each topic represents a crucial aspect of the project's holistic approach to coral reef conservation.
